Escape The Cold! Visit Italy!

Not a fan of the cold? Well, summer is well and truly coming to an end, meaning it will start to turn cooler - why not escape the cold weather before it arrives and book a winter break to Italy? Below we have picked out the must do’s and see’s during your trip - if you need your arm twisted!

Visit The Italian Riviera

Something you must do during your trip to Italy is visit the Italian Riviera. The Rivera’s centre is Genoa which is divided into two main sections; the Riviera di Ponente and the Riviera di Levante. The destination has incredible views of the stone beach and electric blue waters - it is a very photogenic location especially with array of multi coloured houses. After you have taken in the views and relaxed by the beach you can head into one of the nearby towns set in the cliffs on the coastline, such as Cinque Terre, Lerici, Portofino and Bordighera. If you want to escape the busy towns head to Riomaggiore where you can hike along the seaside trails. Pesto lover? Then you're in the right place as Riomaggiore is famed for its pesto pasta dishes!

Eat Gelato

Eat Pizza

It is inevitable that you will eat Italian food during your trip, but you must try a pizza in the Naples! If you are going to eat it, it’s essential you eat it in the town it was born right? So try the Pizzeria which claims to be the pizza inventor, after all it would be rude to not test one out wouldn’t it?

Venice Gondola Ride

This is a must if you visit Venice. Despite the ride being slightly costly, it is worth it. The gondola is a traditional flat bottomed Venetian rowing boat. You will be pushed across the Venetian lagoon and we recommend taking your ride at night when all of the town and water is lit up. The Gondola was previously the only form of transport in Venice and now, their primary role is to carry tourists from place to place.

Driving Along The Amalfi Coast

If you like living on the edge, here is your opportunity to drive on the edge - of the Italian coastline. The drive takes you along the stretch of the Italian coastline where the views are simply stunning. If you don't feel brave enough to drive this precarious road trip; then get one of the Italians to drive you, or for those who love an adrenaline rush hop on the back of a motorbike!

Explore The Greek Sites Of Sicily

The historical sites in Sicily are said to be better than any in Greece and the best in Italy- ideal for those of you who love a bit of history, as this part of Italy is for you!  It’s been on the tourist trail since Goethe wrote home in 1786 to the Agrigento Valle Dei Templi. We recommend the Catacombs at the Capuchin Monastery which contains thousands of mummified bodies.

Why Croatia Is So Fashionable Right Now?

Croatia is described as one of the most fashionable holiday destinations of this year, but why? Maybe because of its constant, slow growth or maybe because it is regularly visited by one of the most popular celebrity couples, Jay Z and Beyonce? Either way, we have picked out 6 reasons why we think Croatia should be on your holiday radar!

Waters

Croatia is the coast with the most; as its main attraction comes from its coastline (the whole 1800km of it). The turquoise water is magnificently crystal clear no matter which island you visit - and trust us, you will not be short of choice as Croatia’s Adriatic Sea coast has more than a 1000 islands. Croatia is voted second to Cyprus of having the cleanest and well-kept shores, this is because most of the beaches are pebbly. The most photogenic beach is Zlatni Rat on the island of Brac with its unique triangular point beach which reaches far into the ocean.

Food & Wine

During your visit you won’t have to worry about not like not liking the cuisine there as Croatian food is a combination of Italian and Mediterranean with a new-world twist. The most popular dishes you will find are pizza’s, risotto’s and fish dishes. If you are a lover of wine then you are in luck as it is practically tradition to have a carafe of wine with your evening meal. Croatia is known for its impeccable wine selection with over 64 indigenous grape varieties which are used to create a wide range of wines.

History/culture

There is something for everyone in this country - the coastal towns are ideal for those after a laid back break, or for a more upbeat atmosphere you can enjoy the fast paced city. Like to walk? Well you can certainly do this around the towns and cities, allowing you time to take in the modern and ancient buildings.

Most towns have historical centers with unique Croatian architecture. Croatia also has the history of several stone ages which have been discovered all over the country with a few of their caves containing hand made objects from people who were alive hundreds of years ago.

Diving

Due to the incredible coastline this destination is a divers dream! It is becoming the up and coming diving destination thanks to its shallow waters and lengthy coastline, divers get the opportunity to explore coral reefs, shipwrecks and caves.

Weather

Not even the weather weakens the lists of positives of Croatia. The Mediterranean climate means mild winters and gorgeous summer seasons. The county has hot, dry summer weather in the summer and mild albeit occasionally wet in winter, but that is only occasionally.

Original is always better!

Going out for food on holiday can be a challenge within itself if you have young children or fussy eaters. We have picked out 4 popular dishes which you are guaranteed to recognised!

Try Gelato in Italy
As Italian food is one of the most popular cuisines cooked in homes and eaten in restaurants, we have no doubt that during your trip to Italy you will not struggle to find a dish to satisfy you. Italy are the original makers of Gelato - go on indulge, after all you are on holiday! You haven't lived until you have tried a scoop or ten of Gelato in Italy. The Italian creation puts Mr Whippy and Carte D’or to shame! There are endless flavours so even the fussiest of eaters will find one they like, and for those not-so-fussy eaters - good luck choosing from the selection. So why is it so awesome? It’s not just the flavours but the texture. It is creamy, smooth, velvety,  and very, very morish.

Tuck into some Jerk Chicken in Jamaica
Jerk is a style of cooking native to Jamaica in which meat is marinated with a very hot spice mixture called Jamaican jerk spice. Jerk Chicken is believed to have been initiated when the Maroons introduced African meat cooking techniques to Jamaican ingredients and seasoning's used by Arawak. The spice contains two main ingredients, Scotch bonnet peppers and allspice (pimento). For those afraid of spice or with children, don’t worry most Jamaican restaurants will ask you how spicy want your dish, and dishes are occasionally served with natural yoghurt which calms the spices down. This dish is so popular because of the barbecued, crispy chicken and pork after it has been marinated. During your trip why not try something a little different and order Jerk lamb or jerk beef!

Paella
Of course Paella is on our list, the most yummy and famous Spanish dish. We've all tried to make our own Paella, or at least know someone who has and it sends up being more of a stodgy risotto no matter how many times you try. So during your Spanish trip, why not try the real thing! Paella will be on most menu’s and is served on most Spanish islands.

The rice based Valerian dish is recognised internationally, and it served in many different ways with a variety of ingredients. The thing about it, is that you can chuck in whatever you like when you make it yourself. The traditional version includes both chicken and rabbit, (yes, we said rabbit), and a mixture of vegetables. However the most common and what you will find in nearly all Spanish restaurants is seafood including an array of mussels, prawns, clams, calamari etc.

Guacamole
One for all you calorie counters and health fanatics. The famous Mexican dip, Guacamole. This avocado based dip originated with Aztecs in Mexico. It is made from mashed avocado with salt with amolcajete which is mortar and pestle. This can be brought in the UK and made at home easily, however the best is obviously in Mexico, so do not forget to try it on your holiday! The core ingredient is avocado and depending on where you buy it from, it can contain different recipes such as onion, lemon juice, tomato, Chilli as well as other seasoning's. It is served a starter with a variety of things to dip in, most commonly in mexico it is bread or tortillas.

Places That Truly Have The WOW Factor!

Why not spoil your eyes with some of the world’s most beautiful holiday attractions. Read on to see the top 6 most beautiful destinations. Be aware though, after you see the photo’s you will most definitely want to go as you won’t believe they really exist!

Antelope Canyon, Arizona, United States
This canyon is the result of water flowing for millions of years, which eventually carved out this deep, yet narrow crevice. The magnificent coloured effect is created as light is restricted in the deeper areas which makes the walls reflect and appear to be different colours. The Antelope is located on an island called Navajo near Arizona in the United States.

Pamukkale Hot Springs, Turkey
Pamukkale is a display of hot pools found in Turkey. Over the past million years, these hot springs have transformed the landscape. Although they look like they are formed of snow, that is not possible, as in Turkey temperatures are hot all year round. They are in fact just limestone. So if you are in the mood for a strange, warm bath during your holiday, head to these pools. They can be viewed by taking a bus to the city of Denizli.

Underwater Waterfall, Mauritius Island

This has to be one of the most beautiful sea attractions. Found in the Indian Ocean 2000km away from Africa is the underwater waterfall. The strong ocean currents constantly drive sand from the shores into the abyss below forming this one of a kind waterfall. This can be reached by plane which takes you to the south western shore, where you can stay on the island nearby. Tourists are able to enjoy the relaxed beaches, explore the reefs as well as view the underwater world.

Underwater River, Cenote Angelita, Mexico

This doesn’t look real does it? Well believe us, it is. It’s an actual river under the sea! You will definitely need an underwater camera for this. Next time you visit Mexico take a visit to Cenote Angelita to experience one of the most amazing, natural creations. You are probably wondering how this is even formed? This is the result when hydrogen sulfate mixes with saltwater, which makes the water heavier than regular salt water, forcing it to sink to the bottom, which creates the river.

Hidden Beach, Mexico

Some argue that this hidden beach was formed after a deliberate bombing. As the Marieta Islands are uninhabited it leaves them vulnerable and as a result in the 1900’s it ended up being used as military testing sights decided by the use of Mexican Government. Test bombs are the common cause for many caves and rock formations on the island. The hidden beach is only accessible by swimming to it or driving through a fifty foot tunnel. If you want to visit this hidden beach you can find it on the west of Puerto Vallarta, in Mexico at the mouth of Banderas Bay.

Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

This is Croatia’s most visited tourist attraction, the lakes are a must see! It was credited UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. This park is so beautiful due to its 16 interlinked waterfalls. What makes this woodland park even more beautiful is the wildlife that call it home, including deers, bears, boars, wolves and some bird species. The park is open all day all year round meaning you do not have to worry about season restrictions. For those of you who are totally engrossed with the beauty of this park, we have some good news; you can stay in accommodation within the park in one of its three hotels.

Holiday Souvenirs That Won’t End Up In The Bin!

We are all guilty of going on holiday and become engrossed in the amount of souvenirs on offer, and in the heat of the moment, buy it all, to then realise you need extra hand luggage to get it all home. When you eventually get home you never look at them again because they are useless and not to mention worthless. So to help you break this habit, we have picked out some oversea souvenirs which are actually worth investing in!

Morocco - Argan Oil
Are you a huge fan of Moroccan/Argan oil and regularly pay double figures for it here in the UK? Well why not stock up during your trip to Morocco, the original producer, where you will pay no more than 3 pound for a small bottle. Morocco's native Argan Tree makes the golden coloured oil, which is superior to any other brand sold here. It is not only a richer consistency, but it is also jam packed in beneficial Vitamins. Being pure and intense also means only the tiniest of drop is needed.

So what is so good about Argan Oil? Well as it happens quite a lot. Commonly described by both men and women as a miracle oil, it is full of Vitamin E and fatty acid. This oil works wonders for shinier, thicker hair and also creates a radiant glow when used on skin and helps to fight blemishes and any signs of aging. Not to forget – it can also improve nail growth.

2. Jamaica - Coffee
If you’re a coffee-aholic, why not spoil yourself or friends and family with one of the best coffees in the world, the Alto Grande produced and sold on the Jamaican island of Puerto Rico. If you think a jar of coffee is not personal enough, then add your own touch by bringing home a couple of pounds worth of hand-picked Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee!

Does a high-quality cup of Jamaican coffee have the same taste as a standard UK cup? No.  Jamaican coffee is smooth and mild in acidity with virtually no bitterness and is full-bodied with noticeable exotic berry-like flavour.

3. Istanbul - Evil Eye (Matia)
Want something meaningful? Then the Evil Eye is for you and the best thing, they will cost you no more than a fiver! The eye has meaning unlike other jewelry you may find abroad. The Matia’s, otherwise know as the Evil Eye, is said to fight away bad luck and because of this meaning, they have become little treasurys not only by Turkish locals but also tourists.

The glass eye stays the same, and is available in different forms all over Turkey. Most commonly worn as a friendship bracelet, it is also used on necklaces, key chains, door hangs and during your trip to Turkey you are likely to see the symbol painted on walls and occasionally on some of the countries aircraft’s.

So where can you buy them in Turkey? Luckily, everywhere. The symbol is sold in all places in turkey but particularly Istanbul where it was initially created.

4. Caribbean - Skin Care products
The most obvious and common Caribbean souvenir brought home is alcohol with some islands home to some of the best bitters & spirits in the world. However the biggest, missed secret is the natural skincare products which you can get your hands on over there. Did you know the first cosmetic product to include Aloe Vera, was produced in the Caribbean? Not only do they make Aloe Vera products but they also produce natural creams which include extracts from native Caribbean fruits and flowers.

So if you’re skin care obsessed, or have friends and family who are, head to Aruba and check out one of Aruba Aloe, St Barts for natural creams or Pure Source in Barbados for their popular range of natural skincare products.
